Questions by topic.
The questions readers send us most, answered with the notice or receipt behind each answer.
Do I need a TIMS card for Everest in 2026?
No. Since April 2023 the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality fee replaced TIMS on the Everest side. You pay NPR 2,000 at Lukla or Monjo, in cash. TIMS is still asked for on Annapurna and Langtang.
Can I buy the Sagarmatha permit in Kathmandu?
Yes, at the Tourism Board office in Bhrikuti Mandap, 10:00 to 17:00, Sunday to Friday. Most trekkers buy it at the Monjo gate instead; the price is the same.
Do children pay park fees?
Children under ten pay nothing at most park gates. Some counters still charge NPR 900; we have two receipts that disagree and have marked the figure contested.
Is the fee lower in the monsoon?
No. National park and conservation fees are the same all year. Only the restricted-area permits change with the season.
Can I pay in dollars or by card at the gate?
Rupees only, in cash, at every park gate we have checked. Change money in Kathmandu or Lukla before you walk in.
What happens if I lose my permit on the trail?
You pay again at the next checkpoint. Rangers do not accept photos of the ticket.
Where exactly is my permit checked?
At Monjo on the way in, and again at the park office above Namche. Keep it somewhere you can reach.
Can I trek Manaslu alone?
No. Restricted areas need a licensed guide and at least two trekkers on the permit.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
Park fees are not refunded once paid. Restricted-area permits can be changed for dates only through your agency.
