The 6:40 am Tara Air flight from Kathmandu to Lukla carries 18 passengers. On the morning of 2 October, the man in seat 4A paid NPR 7,555. The woman behind him, from Lyon, paid USD 224, which is a little under NPR 30,000. Same plane, same bag allowance, same 35 minutes over the hills.
Where it stops being ordinary
Two-tier pricing is normal in Nepal. Park fees, museum tickets and even some bus seats cost more for foreigners. What makes Lukla different is the size of the gap and who sets it.
The domestic fare is capped by the Civil Aviation Authority. The foreign fare is not. Airlines publish it in dollars, change it with the season, and sell most of it through agencies that add their own margin.

USD 224 vs NPR 7,555
Same plane, same seat. The foreign fare is set in dollars by the airline; the Nepali fare is capped by the aviation authority.
So who gets the difference?
We asked the airline, two agencies in Thamel and the counter at Tribhuvan. The answers matched more than we expected: most of the foreign fare covers the airline’s season, its insurance and the agency’s cut, in roughly that order.

The porter is not in that chain
None of the foreign fare reaches the people who carry your bag from the airstrip. Porters in the Khumbu are paid by the day, in cash, and the rate has barely moved in two seasons.
“We see the planes every morning. We don’t see the money.”
What to do instead
- 01Book the flight direct with the airline’s Kathmandu office, not through a trekking package.
- 02Ask for the fare in writing. If it is above USD 224 in autumn, ask why.
- 03Hire porters at Lukla through the porter association, and agree the day rate before you start.
