At 5,164 m, the price board at the Gorak Shep lodge lists a hot shower at NPR 700 and a phone charge at NPR 400. Two days lower, in Namche, the same shower is NPR 500.
Why water costs more higher up
Above Lobuche there is no wood to burn. Lodges heat water with gas carried up by porters and yaks, and every cylinder adds to the price of a shower.
Solar showers exist at some lodges and are often free in the afternoon, but only when the sun has been out.
Hot shower · Gorak Shep · autumn 2026
NPR 700
More than a night’s room at some lodges. NPR 500 in Namche, NPR 600 in Dingboche.
What it adds up to
Over twelve days, showers and charging add USD 80 to 100 to an Everest trip, about the same as the park permits.

What lodge owners say
Owners told us gas prices rose this spring and they passed it on. Two lodges dropped the shower price for guests who ate both meals there.
“Every cylinder comes up on someone’s back.”
What to do
- 01Shower lower down; skip it at Gorak Shep for one night.
- 02Ask about solar showers, often free in the afternoon.
- 03Carry a power bank and charge where it is cheap.
