What a policy needs to cover above 4,000 m, and what most don’t.

Short answer

  • Check your policy covers trekking to at least 6,000 m.
  • Make sure helicopter rescue is included.
  • Carry your policy number and emergency phone line.

Many standard travel policies stop at 3,000 or 4,000 m. A rescue from Gorak Shep can cost several thousand dollars.

This is general guidance, not a checked figure. Read your own policy.
